What 11 points costs
Fable 5.1 leads Terra by 11 points on Intelligence Index v4.3. That is a lot. It is almost the whole distance between Anthropic’s own Sonnet 5 and Opus 5.
Every way of measuring the price says roughly four to five times:
- List: 5x on input, about 4.2x on output.
- Blended: $7.17 against $1.74, about 4.1x.
- Measured: $13,129 against $2,501 to run Artificial Analysis’s full index, about 5.3x.
The three numbers come from different methods and land in the same place. That consistency is worth something on its own. It suggests that, on Artificial Analysis’s tasks at least, neither model is hiding a large token-efficiency effect that makes it much cheaper per task than its rate implies, the way there is between GPT-6 Astra and Sol.
The one price where they nearly meet
Read the cache row. Fable 5.1 reads cached tokens at $0.25 per million, because Anthropic prices its cache hits at 2.5% of input. Terra reads cache at $0.20. On that single line the flagship costs 25% more than the mid-tier model, not four times as much.
The whole-request gap only moves toward that 25% when cached input is overwhelmingly larger than output. It rarely is. Under 272K tokens, a request costs 0.25 × cached + 50 × output on Fable 5.1 and 0.20 × cached + 12 × output on Terra, both in millions of tokens. Output is where Fable 5.1 is four times dearer. And it keeps adaptive thinking on for every request, which Anthropic’s thinking docs say is billed as output tokens even when the thinking text is not returned to you.
The cache discount narrows the gap for long loops that re-read a large context and answer briefly. It does not narrow it for a model that thinks before every answer, which is how Fable 5.1 always runs.
Long prompts narrow it from the other side. Above 272K input tokens Terra bills the whole request at 2x input and 1.5x output, so $4 / $18. Fable 5.1 stays at $10 / $50 across its 1M window, which narrows the list-price gap to 2.5x on input and 2.8x on output for long-context work.

A lot of the searches name Fable 5 rather than 5.1. On the same index Fable 5 scores 49.70, nearly four points below 5.1, at the same $10 / $50 list price and a cache read four times as expensive, at $1 per million.

Standardising on either one is the mistake. Terra as the default and Fable 5.1 as the escalation costs far less than Fable 5.1 everywhere and finishes more than Terra everywhere.

What would change my mind
A Terra price change. OpenAI’s Terra page carries no promotional note, unlike Sol’s, but any move changes a ratio this large.
A cost-per-completed-task figure for Terra on long agentic work. If Terra fails and retries often enough on that work, the effective price gap could shrink well below four times.
The next index version. Eleven points is wide enough to survive a rebalance, but the absolute numbers will move.
